Billowing smoke sends volunteers to Ceres area

Volunteer firefighters responded to a call of a fire at the Ceres Research and Industrial Interplex late Sunday afternoon, but it turned out to be a controlled fire of a nearby wheat field, said Warren County Volunteer Fire Department Coordinator Kelly Worthy.

Ceres, located about 10 miles east of Vicksburg on Interstate 20, was apparently engulfed in smoke from the nearby fire, said Worthy, prompting several people to report the fire.

Worthy encouraged those conducting any controlled fire in the county to call 601-631-8800 to report where and when the fire will take place to avoid unnecessary emergency responses.
