John B. Fowler

VAUGHAN, Miss. – John B. “Buddy” Fowler died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Yazoo City. He was 98.

Mr. Fowler was born in Yazoo County to Perry Brister and John Henry Fowler. He lived in Vaughan, Miss., and was a former Vicksburg resident. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

He was a member of Ellison Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Fowler; and a son, Frank Fowler.

He is survived by one daughter, Rose Marie Price of Emerald Isle, N.C.; one sister, Lillie Bell Cresap of Canton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. today at Ellison Methodist Church with Grady Bailey officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery under the direction of Culpepper Funeral Services of Canton.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home or to the Ellison Baptist Church Building Fund.

Melvin Harris

Melvin Harris died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 61.

Mr. Harris retired from Anderson-Tully Co. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Paul M.B. Church in Utica.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy C. and Louise Mason Shears; his foster parents, George and Lucinda Mason McGriggs; and one sister, Carrie Rhodman.

He is survived by his wife, Daisy Mae Harris of Vicksburg; one daughter, Tammy Harris Bryant of Vicksburg; five brothers, George Shears and Jack Shears, both of New Orleans, Milton Shears of Jackson and Carl Shears and Preston Shears, both of Utica; one sister, Annie Shears of Utica; four grandchildren; and other relatives.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Johnson

Services for Dorothy M. Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel A.M.E. Church with Pastor Robert Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 7 tonight at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 71.

Born in Jefferson County, Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Claiborne County High School. She was a retired nurse with the State of Mississippi. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church and Rose of Sharon Eastern Star No. 24.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie L. Johnson; her son, Wayne Johnson; two brothers, Paul Green Jr. and Henry Green; and her parents, Paul and Annie Green.

Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Johnson-Martin of Chicago and Nichelle Smith of Vicksburg; four sisters, Pauline Major of Vicksburg and Barbara Buck, Juline Green and Delores Wells, all of Port Gibson; four brothers, Frank Green and Lawrence Green, both of Chicago, and Arthur Green and Matthew Green, both of Port Gibson; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Marie Kimble Phelps

Marie Kimble “Topsie” Phelps died Monday, June 9, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 69.

Mrs. Phelps was the retired owner of Phelps Bail Bonding Co. She was a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church, Freetown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah “Billy” Phelps; her father, James Kimble; her mother, Mary Williams Randle; a brother, John A. Jackson; a sister, Rosie Marsh; and her grandparents, Ed Williams and Emma Williams.

She is survived by one daughter, Toya P. Nix of Oxford; three brothers, Steven Randle and Lawrence H. Randle, both of Vicksburg, and James E. Jackson of Chicago; four sisters, Mary M. Wilson and Mavies Randle, both of Vicksburg, Tillie R. Dorris of Shorewood, Ill., and Dorothy Randle of Urbana, Ill.; two grandchildren; and other relatives, including Sammie Rainey and Linda R. Smith of Vicksburg.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
