Two members of Vicksburg’s Board of Zoning Appeals have resigned, leaving vacancies on the volunteer board that administers the city’s zoning ordinance.

Lonnie Boykin and Jack Burrell, both longtime members of the volunteer board, submitted letters of resignation, which were accepted Tuesday by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the board who appoints them.

“They will be sorely missed,” Mayor Laurence Leyens said. “They both brought a lot of value to the board.”

The zoning board is a seven-member board composed of community members who make rulings on administrative reviews, grant special exceptions and variances, and make recommendations on rezoning requests and amendments to the zoning ordinance. Rulings may be appealed to the city board. If city officials uphold the zoning board’s decision, an appeal may be made to the Warren County Circuit Court.

Currently serving on the advisory board are chairman Tim Fagerberg, Mark Corum, Warren Jones, Fred Katzenmeyer and Casey Fisher. Each is serving a four-year term.

Boykin’s term began in 2005 and was to expire October 2009. Burrell was appointed in 2002 after former board member John Hennessey resigned. Burrell would have served through Oct. 30.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen will appoint two new members. People interested in serving may call the mayor’s office at 601-631-3718, North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfied’s office at 601-631-3770 or South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman’s office at 601-634-4507.

The zoning board meets the first Tuesday of every month.
