16 students get $9,500 in VHBC scholarships|[07/06/08]

The Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club has announced its 2008 scholarship winners.
The annual scholarship dinner-dance banquet saw 16 students awarded $9,500 during the 33rd Vicksburg Homecoming Celebration.
The four-day celebration kicked off Thursday and wrapped up with the scholarship banquet Saturday night.
The Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club was founded in 1975 by Booker T. Wilson and five others. It reunites former and current Vicksburg residents and offers various forms of assistance, including scholarships to college-bound students.
This year’s scholarship recipients:
Vicksburg High School
Bettye Banks – $500 James Lee Buie Memorial Scholarship, plans to attend Jackson State University and major in chemistry and pre-medicine.
Adam Farrish – $1,000 Chicago Chapter Scholarship, plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in biology.
Darryl Harris – $500 Strait-Way Church Scholarship, plans to attend Jackson State University and major in computer engineering.
Courtney Johnson – $500 Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club Scholarship, plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in business and finance.
Brandy Martin – $500 Beulah Lockett Memorial Scholarship, plans to attend Alcorn State University and major in medicine.
Britnei Shepard – $500 James and Josephine Wallace Scholarship, plans to attend Hinds Community College and major in health information technology.
Megan Sullivan – $500 Edward and Ernestine Williams Scholarship, plans to attend Alcorn State University and major in pre-medicine and biology.
Brittany Wilson – $500 Alfred Dillard Memorial, plans to attend Alcorn State University and major in business administration.
Warren Central High School
Brittany Erves – $500 Las Vegas Chapter Scholarship, plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in pre-law.
Shawntrice Jordan – $500 James and Josephine Wallace Scholarship, plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi and major in nursing.
Ashley Pratt – $500 Chicago Chapter Vera Wilson Memorial, plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi and major in biology and psychology.
Sage Robinson – $500 Hattie Knox Memorial Scholarship, plans to attend Alcorn State University and major in nursing.
Jaleesa Walker – $500 Founder’s Award, plans to attend Hinds Community College and major in nursing.
Colleges
Raisa Ford – $500 Rosa Queen Memorial Scholarship, attends Mississippi College and is majoring in kinesiology and exercise science.
Mernevie Mitchell – $1,000 Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship, attends Hinds Community College and is majoring in nursing.
LaTasha Winston – $1,000 Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship, attends Alcorn State University and is majoring in nursing.
