Venom still alive at Ripken tournament|[07/21/08]

The Vicksburg Venom began their long haul through the losers’ bracket of the Cal Ripken 10-year-olds’ Southwest Regional on Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Monticello, Ark.

The Venom, who lost their first game on Saturday to Bryant, Ark., will play Amarillo, Texas, today at 3:15 p.m. in an elimination game. Amarillo lost to Eagle Pass, Texas, on Sunday.

Dale Griffith pitched five strong innings to earn the victory. He struck out eight batters and only walked two.

Taft Nesmith pitched the final inning and struck out two.

The game stayed scoreless into the third inning when the Venom broke the game open. Two walks and a two-RBI double by Tyler Smith gave Vicksburg a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Venom batted around and scored five more runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Will Pierce, Landon Little and Brooks Boolos all singled and Lany Hynum hit a two-RBI triple to highlight the fourth inning.

Lindsey captures Clear Creek title

Rodney Lindsey won the championship flight of the Clear Creek club championships on Sunday with a two-day total of 151.

Lindsey beat Keith Ehrhardt by one stroke to earn the championship.

Tim Curtis shot a two-day 169 to win the first flight.

In the senior division, Dusty Rhodes defeated Eddie Fowler in a sudden-death, seven-hole playoff. Both players had a two-day total of 154. The senior division has players at least 60 years old.

Don Biedenharn won the super senior division by beating Bill Boots. Super seniors are at least 70 years old.
