Rachel B. Bingham
Services for Rachel B. Bingham will be at noon Saturday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Vicksburg with the Rev. Franklin Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service.
Mrs. Bingham died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 81.
Mrs. Bingham was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Bingham; her parents, Jerry and Cora Monroe Gordon; and nine brothers and five sisters.
She is survived by seven nieces, Cora Jones of Vicksburg, Ethel Jones of Richland, Cora Smith of Kosciusko, Margaret Haynes of Taylorsville, Helen Gaultney of Lorman, Rosie Dunbar of Birmingham, Ala., and Mary Copeland of Omaha, Neb.; two nephews, George Patterson of Vicksburg and Bennie Patterson of New Orleans; and great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
Walter Cole
Walter Cole died Wednesday, July 23, 2008. He was 75.
Mr. Cole was a member of King David No. 1 M.B. Church. He retired as assistant chief from the Vicksburg Police Department, serving 30 years. He also worked as a detention officer with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Lucky 7, Elks and American Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213.
He served in the Army and Air Force and received a number of medals during the Korean War as part of the military police.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Cole and Martha Weatherspoon; his stepmother, Sarah Cole; a son, Ronald Cole; and two brothers, Henderson Cole and Oscar Cole.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Cole Lakes of Racine, Wis.; three sisters, Marguerite Cole Willis of Rolling Fork, Ruth Ann Cole Gates of Greenville and Pearlie Mae Anderson of Chicago; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.
Ervin L. Collins Sr.
RAYMOND – Ervin L. Collins Sr. died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 64.
A resident of Raymond, Mr. Collins had formerly lived in Louisiana and Texas before returning to the Raymond area. He was a graduate of Raymond High School. He was a veteran of the Army and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Neil Collins Sr.; and a brother, Neil Collins Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Cox Collins of Raymond; three sons, E. Lacy Collins Jr. and Marvin Neil Collins, both of Raymond, and Wesley Everett Collins of Seattle, Wash.; his mother, Sarah F. Collins of Jackson; one brother, Calvin Collins of Byrum; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica with the Rev. Jerry File officiating. Burial will follow at the Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home in Utica.
Clint Fortenberry
TRANSYLVANIA, La. – Funeral services for Clint Fortenberry of Transylvania, La., will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at Transylvania Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Eagles officiating. Interment will be at the Providence Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Lake Providence.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Cox Funeral Home.
Mr. Fortenberry was born July 26, 1933, in Forest, La., and died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in West Monroe. He was a lifelong farmer who, following retirement, continued to advise and assist his son, David, in his farming operation. Mr. Fortenberry was currently serving as an auxiliary deputy with the East Carroll Sheriff’s Department. He also was a legendary supporter of the Briarfield Academy and Tallulah Academy athletic programs. He served as girls’ basketball coach at Tallulah Academy in 1970s and was often asked for coaching advice by younger coaches.
Mr. Fortenberry was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ezell Fortenberry; his grandsons, Justin Fortenberry and Wade Fortenberry; his parents, Fount and Angie Fortenberry; his brothers, Quitman, Ray, F.E., Elton and Bent Fortenberry; and his sisters, Bradis Johnson, Dee Shores and Short Fairchild.
Survivors include his children, Lynne Grady and husband Whoop of Tallulah, David Fortenberry and wife Debbie of Transylvania, Danna Gillett and husband Doug of Rayville, Laura Sevier and husband Billy of Sondheimer and Liz Roland of Transylvania and friend Kevin Fillebaum of Vicksburg; grandchildren, Sarah Fortenberry Holt and husband Tim of Lake Providence, Emily Gillett Becnel and husband Steven of Franklinton, John Roland of Transylvania, Britt Grady of Monroe, Carly Gillett of Rayville, Chelsea Johnson of Transylvania, Alli Roland of Vicksburg, Katie Grady of Tallulah and Mary Beth Roland of Transylvania; great-grandchild, Miller Holt of Lake Providence; and brothers, Quinton Fortenberry and Earl Fortenberry of Transylvania.
Pallbearers will be Lee Michael Fairchild, Terry Lynn Jones, Dennis Fortenberry, Roger Knight, Buford Fortenberry and Neil Martin.
Honorary pallbearers are I.T. Crothers, Lance Prine and East Carroll Parish sheriff’s deputies.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Briarfield and Tallulah Academy Athletic Associations, the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
Bobbie Ann Glasper
ROLLING FORK – Bobbie Ann Glasper died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital in Brandon. She was 69.
Mrs. Glasper is survived by five daughters, Gloria Gilmore and Ella Mae Glasper, both of Park Forest, Ill., Bobbie Smith of Plainfield, N.J., Doris Thomas of Tacoma, Wash., and Shietha M. Glasper of Jackson; five sons, Charles Glasper and John Lee Glasper, both of Chicago, Harry Glasper Jr. and Rowl Glasper, both of Park Forest, and Robert Earl Hobbs of Jackson; eight sisters, Victoria Porter, Lorine Hobbs and Cora Jackson, all of Lansing, Mich., Shirley Hobbs and Mildred McCullough, both of St. Louis, Joeannia Moore of Chicago, Paula Gates of Hollandale and Shirley Davis of Anguilla; nine brothers, Richard Hobbs and Rayfield Hobbs, both of Greenville, Ira Lee Hobbs of Isola, Leroy McCoy of Hollandale, Johnny Lee Hobbs of St. Louis, Willie T. Hobbs of Lansing, Moses Hobbs of Ithaca, Mich., and Clarence McCoy and Eugene McCoy, both of Chicago; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Charlie Caesar officiating. Burial will follow at Green Chapel Cemetery in Rolling Fork. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Reginald George Harris
Reginald George “Jake” Harris died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 76.
Mr. Harris was retired from Waterways Experiment Station. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake Sr. and Maud B. Preacely Harris; three brothers, Jake Harris Jr., Leroy Harris and Walter Harris; and one sister, Bertha H. Williams.
Survivors include one brother, Clyde Harris Sr. of Vicksburg; one sister, Josephine H. Sanders of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including his caregivers LaShonda Jackson and Brenda McNeil.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Shirley Mae Italiano
Shirley Mae Italiano died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Dennis, Miss. She was 62.
Mrs. Italiano had been a Vicksburg resident for more than 50 years. She was affiliated with the Church of God of Prophecy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Ida Mae Scallions; and two brothers, Stanley and James Scallions.
She is survived by her husband, Guy Italiano Jr. of Vicksburg; one son, Guy Italiano III of Ridgeland; two daughters, Kim Italiano of Ashland City, Tenn., and Galen Pharr of Belmont, Miss.; two brothers, Lacey Scallions and Leslie Scallions, both of Vicksburg; one sister, Deserie Edwards of Vicksburg; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Revs. Claxton Cook and Edward Pharr officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Danny Scallions, Jerry Edwards, James Edwards, Todd Scallions, Junior Scallions and Brandon Theriault.
