A Vicksburg man and a Natchez woman were arrested Tuesday after they attempted to cash counterfeit checks at Wal-Mart’s Money Center, 2150 Iowa Blvd, Vicksburg police crime analyst Suzan Ebeling said.

Edwin Jones, 19, 320 Fisher Ferry Road, and Sophie Williams, 35, 719 Smith Lane, Natchez, were taken into custody at 12:11 p.m. and charged with uttering a forgery and possession of counterfeit objects.

Copies of the checks have been obtained and it is believed all suspects endorsed them with their real names, causing police to believe they will be able to find the other three quickly, Ebeling said.

Described as a black male in his mid-30s and wearing a white cap, white shirt, blue jeans, boots and sunglasses, the suspect left in an unidentified vehicle.

Woman says car taken; vehicle found burning

An abandoned car found burning on Mississippi 27 late Tuesday night reportedly had been carjacked about five hours earlier, authorities said.

The black Ford Taurus belonged to the mother-in-law of a Fayette woman who told Vicksburg police she was forced to walk to the Mississippi Welcome Center on Warrenton Road after being forced at gunpoint to give up the car on the side of Interstate 20.

She said she was westbound on I-20 when two men, 15 to 17 years old, drove up behind her and flashed their lights, prompting her to pull off the road.

They pulled a gun and physically fought with her, she said, forcing her to leave the vehicle. She then walked to the welcome center for aid.

The car was found burning at about 11 p.m.
