John W. Anderson

Mr. John W. Anderson died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 91.

A native of Hope, Ark., he was the son of the late Olin and Florence Reed Anderson.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and the Korean Conflict, in the Pacific. He attended Louisiana Tech University and, in 1939, was employed by the Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Anderson’s assignments included surveys, hydraulics and  public affairs; he retired after 45 years as executive assistant.

Mr. Anderson received a number of awards, including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1962 and 1973; complimentary remarks by Sen. David Pryor of Arkansas in 1985; complimentary remarks by Sen. Jamie Whitten, chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee in the Hearing on Energy and Water Development Appropriations in 1986; commendation from the Mississippi House of Representatives Concurrent Resolution in 1985; Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year Award in 1973; Vicksburg Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellow award in 1997; and was inducted into the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in 1966.

Mr. Anderson was a member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Turner Anderson; and two sisters, Rosa Maxwell and Frances Webb.

He is survived by his daughter, Nila Dian Anderson of Vicksburg; two nieces; two nephews; and a number of cousins, including Pat and Nancy Bonner of Vicksburg.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be Pat Bonner, Johnny Barber, Leo Boolos, Hugh Green, Steve Washington and Joe Loviza.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rena Washington, Jackie Barber and Virginia Clarke.
