Cell phone use blamed for claim of Warren Central shooting

The use of cell phones at Warren Central High School this morning was blamed for alarms and phone calls across the county that claimed a student shooting at the Mississippi 27 campus.
“There is no credible evidence of anyone with a weapon on campus,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said late this morning, adding the proliferation of cell phones, which school policy does not completely forbid, fueled rapid spread of word of up to four shooting victims.
“The text messaging went like wildfire,” Pace said. “I would hope the school district would take immediate action against any student that adversely affected the education process at Warren Central today.”
It began at about 8 a.m., Pace said, with reports from students via text message about someone possessing a gun on the campus.
Sheriff’s deputies descended on the school and interviewed several students, including the student who is believed to have alerted a parent, thus setting off the wave of misinformation, Pace said.
Superintendent James Price said a group of students aged 15 to 17 will face “appropriate disciplinary action” pending further questioning by school officials.
“It could be a suspension, or we could file charges,” Price said. “It depends on who did what and how they did it.”
Price said cell phones are taken from students if not kept in book bags and out of easy reach.
Classes continued as normal, Price said.
