Monika Mayr was honored Sept. 3 in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

“I was very happy that the park was recognized for all of the good work,” said Mayr, who has worked at the VNMP for four years. “It was an award really deserved  by all the staff here.”

Mayr has worked with the National Park Service for 25 years. Before coming to Vicksburg, she worked at Biscayne National Park near Miami.

The Appleman-Judd-Lewis Award was established in 1970. It is named for three longtime National Park Service employees — historian Roy E. Appleman, historical architect Henry A. Judd and curator Ralph H. Lewis.

In addition to Mayr, Edwin Colón, facility manager at San Juan National Historic Site, and Rosie Pepito, chief of cultural resources at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, will receive awards.

“I am so proud of these three dedicated National Park Service professionals and the work they have done to preserve America’s cultural resources,” National Park Service Director Mary A. Bomar said in a news release.
