St. Al still in hunt for playoffs

As the scores from around the state filtered out over the PA system at Balzli Field on Friday night, a buzz went through the crowd.
Cathedral was beating Mount Olive. Bogue Chitto was being stomped by Stringer. St. Aloysius was on its way to a 35-7 loss to Puckett right before their eyes, but for a few minutes it didn’t matter. Even with the loss, the Flashes were still in the thick of the Region 3-1A race — and maybe in position to move up.
“When you’ve got two losses, you’re not out of it,” St. Al coach B.J. Smithhart said. “We’re just halfway through our season. I’m worried about us. It doesn’t matter who we play if we don’t get better.”
Heading into the season, the region had three teams ranked in the top 10 in Class 1A, and all three — Puckett, Mount Olive and Bogue Chitto — seemed like locks for three of the region’s four playoff spots. Friday’s results changed that thinking, though.
Mount Olive needed to rally for three fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Cathedral 34-28, and Bogue Chitto was routed by Stringer 42-12. Mount Olive stayed in second place, behind undefeated Puckett (5-0), but suddenly looks like it could come back to the pack.
And Bogue Chitto did fall back, out of a tie for first place. The Bobcats are still a half-game ahead of Mount Olive (4-1) for second, but face Puckett this Friday and finish the season with Mount Olive on Nov. 7.
St. Al (4-2), meanwhile, is still in fourth place but has some work to do starting with this week’s game against a hot Pisgah squad. Pisgah is just 2-4 in the region, and has lost two of its last three but has scored 106 points in the same span.
“Pisgah has been lighting it up,” Smithhart said. “If we come out here Monday thinking about Puckett, it’s over with. We’ve got to think about Pisgah.”
