Tracking the dust

Dust flies as Kansas City Southern railroad’s Allen Dansby operates a ballast regulator on tracks just west of the Washington Street tunnel Wednesday afternoon. Dansby was using the machine to clear rocks and debris from the tracks after another machine, called a tamper, packed the track bed. This spot undergoes this type of maintenance about once a year, Dansby said. The tunnel, which allows trains to move under Washington Street from the rail yard east, was built in 1898.
