RAYMOND — Porters Chapel traded quantity for quality Friday night.
The Eagles’ high-powered offense was held under 30 points for just the second time this season, but they scored on three of their first four possessions and held off a late rally to beat Central Hinds 26-13.
Clayton Holmes threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and Josh Perry rushed for 102 yards and two scores for PCA (9-0, 4-0), which clinched the District 5-A championship with the victory. It’s PCA’s third district title in five years, and first since 2005.
“It’s a very good accomplishment for our football team, and it’s a good win for our program,” said PCA coach Randy Wright, who has guided the Eagles to the playoffs in each of his five seasons as their head coach. “In ‘06 we got beat by Riverfield in overtime and last year Central Hinds beat us for the district title. It just feels good to win. I tell the guys district championships, state championships, South State championships, they will all take care of themselves if you win every game.”
Perry scored both of his touchdowns in the first half, helping PCA to a 19-0 lead late in the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, however, Perry’s grandfather, who was sitting in the stands, collapsed and was taken by ambulance to a Jackson hospital. The game was delayed nearly 30 minutes while he was treated. His condition was unknown Friday night.
Afterward, Perry stayed with his teammates and had a big impact on the end of the game. He made three straight tackles to force Central Hinds into a key turnover on downs, and intercepted Trey Lathem’s last-ditch pass on the final drive.
“Josh has a lot of heart and character. He’s a super kid and had a lot of guts out here tonight,” a somber Wright said.
Central Hinds (4-5, 3-1) limited PCA’s offensive chances in the first half by keeping it off the field. Using an attack heavily tilted toward the run — the Cougars only threw one pass in the first half — they had a 6 1/2- and 7-minute drive in the first half and advanced inside PCA’s 20-yard line both times. One ended in a missed field goal and another in a bad snap on a field goal attempt. Another drive to start the second half ended in another missed field goal.
Jordan Townsend ran for 161 yards and a touchdown, and Conner Brown added 70 yards and a score, but the missed opportunities were too much for Central Hinds to overcome.
