Two local athletes sign with four-year schools
Two Warren County athletes made their college choices known today by accepting scholarship offers from Division I schools.
Vicksburg High third baseman Bowen Woodson accepted an offer from Tulane to play baseball, while Warren Central basketball star Sha’Kayla Caples signed a letter of intent with Louisiana Tech.
Woodson plans to sign his letter of intent next week, along with the rest of Tulane’s signing class. The first day of the early signing period for basketball and baseball was Wednesday.
“They wanted everybody to sign on the same day,” he said.
Woodson hit .370, with seven home runs and eight doubles while helping Vicksburg reach the Class 4A championship series last spring. The speedy Gators’ leadoff man also drove in 33 runs, scored 37 runs, and had 22 stolen bases. Equally impressive are his stats in the classroom — he has a 3.95 grade point average, scored a 30 on the ACT, and will be the salutatorian of Vicksburg High’s Class of 2009.
Caples, a three-time Vicksburg Post Girls Basketball Player of the Year, has averaged double digits in points and rebounds for her stellar three-year career. She is aiming to become the first four-time Vicksburg Post Player of the Year.
She is the first Vicksburg-area player to sign with Louisiana Tech since Catrina Frierson played in Ruston nearly a decade ago. The Lady Techsters are coached by Vicksburg native Chris Long.
