Traffic was backed up for an hour and a half and one vehicle was damaged when an illegally felled tree crossed Interstate 20 Tuesday afternoon.

Tammy Tucker, 39, 3426 Newman Road, Edwards, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala when she was forced from the road as the tree fell across the I-20 west lanes near the Rolling Fork exit, said Mississippi Highway Patrolman Daniel Lewis.

He said the tree apparently was being cut for firewood. No information on charges was available. Cutting trees in the state right-of-way can result in arrest.

The oak blocked both lanes until Mississippi Department of Transportation employees could remove the top portion of the tree to clear the left lane.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for about an hour and a half while the rest of the tree was removed, said MDOT’s Bob Broadwater.

The tree cutters were in the process of cutting down a second tree, and it was left damaged, when they fled, Broadwater said.

Tucker was not injured though her car was damaged, Lewis said.
