Cellular South upgrades Internet, music capabilities

Vicksburg and Warren County subscribers to Cellular South can expect to surf the Internet and download music faster as part of a $50 million upgrade to the company’s 3G network.

The Mississippi-based company is the first wireless carrier to deploy the advanced high-speed technology in Vicksburg. Among new mobile high-speed data services included mobile video telephony, high-quality music and other multimedia applications, Tony Kent, senior vice president of Engineering and Operations for Cellular South, said in a statement.

Unlike traditional wireless local area networks, 3G is a wide-area cellular networks that can transmit information over a wider bandwidth. Expansion of Cellular South’s 3G network is part of more than $50 million in similar, ongoing upgrades to equipment, services and software in the company’s overall wireless capability locally.
