Piano, dance classes on SCHC calendar
The Southern Cultural Heritage Center has added events to its January roster.
The dance of the month will be the Foxtrot and will be taught Jan. 11 and 25 by James Frechette, owner of the Jackson-area Applause Dance Factory. The classes will run from 5 to 7 p.m. The fee is $20 per person for each class.
On Jan. 31, the internationally known Ian Hominick will lead an intermediate piano workshop. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The class begins at 10 a.m..

Vicksburg woman’s book published for children
A Vicksburg woman’s book has been published by a Frederick, Md.,-based agency.
Robin Myers, a native of Texas who now lives in the River City, is the author of “Pinky Rabbit Learns to Share,” said a release from PublishAmerica.
Pinky Rabbit’s adventure teaches the lesson of sharing and being a friend. The story was inspired by the children in the author’s family. “Pinky Rabbit” is Myers’ second book.

Poverty Point recycling live Christmas trees
Poverty Point State Historic Site will recycle discarded, live Christmas trees.
Through Friday, people may bring their trees, with all decorations removed, to the parking lot beside the Epps town hall and place their trees in the fenced area. The trees will be taken to Poverty Point, where they will be made into mulch. The mulch will be used in flower beds and other projects on the site.
Poverty Point is located in West Carroll Parish, east of Monroe on Louisiana 577. For information, call 888-926-5492.

Historic Jefferson College has announced upcoming events.

* In The Southern Wild, an exhibit of wildlife photos by Joe Mac Hudspeth Jr. The exhibit will run Jan. 5 through Feb. 28, and admission is free.
* It’s All Greek Revival to Me, a Lunchtime Lecture event. The noon Jan. 22 event will feature speaker Mimi Miller of the Historic Natchez Foundation. Admission is free, and brown bag lunches are allowed.
* EXPLORE! The Secret Lives of Owls, a program that teaches children the ABCs of owls. The Jan. 23 class for ages 6-8 will be from 10 to 1:30 a.m. and ages 9-12 will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $10, and pre-registration and payment are required.
* In Search of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, a Lunchtime Lecture event. The noon Jan. 27 event will feature speaker Mark Bonta, associate professor of geography at Delta State University. Admission is free, and brown bag lunches are allowed.
* EXPLORE! The Nature Trail in Winter, a program for children ages 9-12. Students will hike the trail and start a nature journal. The program will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 31. Admission is $10, and pre-registration and payment are required.
