Kelli Brewer not only stopped plenty of goals on Saturday, she helped score one.

Brewer, Vicksburg High’s junior goal keeper, made a dozen saves, earned a shutout, and contributed an assist on the offensive end as the Missy Gators beat Florence, 3-0. Brewer’s assist came on a long punt that was gathered in by eighth-grader Tabitha Hayden, who then dribbled through the Florence defense and scored.

“She played excellent. Excellent. She saved us a couple of times,” Vicksburg coach Kevin Manton said of Brewer.

Hayden also assisted one of Becky Wilson’s two goals, and Raven Lawrence had another assist for Vicksburg (8-5).

The win sends Vicksburg into a key division game with Pearl on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. Pearl beat VHS in December, but a win in the rematch would give the Missy Gators a big leg up in the Division 3-4A playoff race.

“It’s too early to tell,” exactly how the playoff race will shake out, Manton said. “When we get through with Ridgeland, we’ll know. But it’s a big ballgame.”
