A portion of Mississippi 465 could be renamed in honor of former Vicksburg attorney and outdoorsman Bill Ramsey if a bill filed Tuesday passes the Legislature.

House Bill 1171, filed by Reps. Chuck Espy, D-Clarksdale, George Flaggs, D-Vicksburg and Alex Monsour, R-Vicksburg, would provide for a sign naming the Warren County portion between U.S. 61 North and the Issaquena County line the “William W. ‘Bill’ Ramsey Memorial Highway.” The bill is before the Transportation Committee.

“It’s a fitting tribute to name that little piece of road after him,” said Tom Ramsey, one of Ramsey’s four sons, during Warren County supervisors’ regular meeting Tuesday as he sought and received a board resolution in support of the bill. “It’s a real special place to the Ramsey family.”

Also a former member of the House, Ramsey, who died in 2003, was an avid hunter and owned property in the Eagle Lake community still in the family. He served as vice chairman of the Mississippi Flyway Council Advisory Board and was a regional director of Ducks Unlimited. His legal career included membership with the Mississippi Board of Bar Commissioners, Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association.
