Washing away

Cooler temperatures are getting part of the blame in two spots in Vicksburg where erosion is contributing to dangerous situations. Above, a 40-foot dropoff is encroaching near Washington Street just east of DiamondJacks Casino. City Public Works director Bubba Rainer said Mississippi Department of Transportation officials inspected the spot Tuesday after an annual inspection in December detected street movement. Rainer said the inspectors should turn over their recommendations for the nearby Clark Street bridge Thursday or Friday. Concern over the spot during the past five years led to a reduced weight limit of 10 tons, and the city has earmarked funds to replace the bridge. Rainer said construction should begin “here shortly.” At right, Brandon Toney, in the hole, watches as Bennie Smith, holding a chain, and Donald Wells, driving a back hoe, work to clean out a hole on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The hole, blamed on a collapsed sewer pipe, partly because of cool weather,  was to be repaired, and the roadway was expected to open to normal traffic Friday. The three men are employed by Walker and Wells Construction of Tallulah.
