Clay Street fire handled as accident

A fire that destroyed the upper floor of a Clay Street home Saturday remained under investigation this morning as an accidental chimney fire, Vicksburg Fire Chief Keith Rogers said.

The century-old structure at 911 Clay St., between Monroe and Cherry streets, was undergoing renovation when flames broke out just after 5 p.m., according to neighbors at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters fought the worst of flames for more than an hour, but could not save the roof from caving. Adjacent buildings suffered minor damages.

Warren County property records indicate the two-story home in the city’s historic district, dates to at least 1900.
