Frances Koury, a Vicksburg volunteer, community activist and philanthropist, has received a first place State Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was nominated by Geneva Williams, community service chairman of the local entity of the DAR, the Ashmead Chapter.

Though Koury is not a DAR member, her service to the community earned her the recognition from chapter members.

“We are tremendously honored to have Mrs. Koury represent our chapter,” said member Martha Leese.

Koury was honored Feb. 13 in Ridgeland at the Mississippi State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference. She received a certificate and a lapel pin and will advance to the DAR’s Regional Division competition.

“I am honored to be selected to represent DAR,” said Koury. “It’s been humbling to be appreciated by the community and friends.”

Koury is a retiree who says she did not want to lose momentum in her golden years. She was active in organizations for her three children, including the PTA and church activities. She is the coordinator of musical and cultural events produced by Four Seasons of the Arts, a local organization.

“I enjoy the challenge with each project I’ve been involved in,” Koury said. “The community has been responsive to our projects.”

Koury is married to Ellis Koury. They operated a children’s clothing store on Washington Street.
