There were few trees on the lawn of the Old Court House when this photo was taken in 1876. Court Square was terraced after the war from plans made by Jefferson Davis Bradford, an engineer who wsa a nephew of the Confederate president. Brick walkways, steps and a retaining wall were constructed in 1869-70. In the foreground is First Presbyterian Church, built in 1850s; The Vicksburg now stands on the site. The photo is from the Old Court House Museum collection.
Historic photos taken in and around Vicksburg are featured on Sundays in The Vicksburg Post. Many of the photos are from the J. Mack Moore Collection at the Old Court House Museum. Though not all photos were taken by Mr. Moore, they are part of the collection given to the museum by longtime Vicksburg Post managing editor Charles J. Faulk.
