With only one day left before the deadline, no candidates — including the incumbents — had filed by this morning to seek the two Vicksburg aldermen seats on the city governing board.

Laurence Leyens, who has said he will seek a third term in the mayor’s office, also had not filed papers with the City Clerk’s Office.

North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield and South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman both have said they plan to seek re-election to the spots Mayfield has held for four years and Beauman has held for eight.

The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, and it is not unusual for candidates to wait until the deadline to see how ballots take shape.

Four people have filed to seek the Democratic nomination in the mayoral race against Leyens, who has run previously as an independent.

The four are attorney Paul Winfield, business owner Tommy Wright, former North Ward Alderman Gertrude Young and John Shorter, president of the NAACP Vicksburg chapter.

Primary voting to select Democratic and other party nominees will be May 5, with a May 19 runoff if necessary because a majority is required. Party nominees advance to face any and all independents in general elections where the person with the most votes wins, whether posting a majority or not.

The general election will be June 2, and the new four-year terms will begin on July 1.

The current annual salary for the mayor is $81,033.68, and for aldermen, it is $64,827.10.

The Vicksburg Election Commission consists of James E. Harper Sr., Dell Rogers, Clyde Redmond, Linda Sweezer and Jim Donley.

The commission will be responsible for preparing poll books and certifying the results of elections.
