“This is our first dance,” said Barbara Copeland, T.K. Soul president. “We’re excited about it and we hope for a good turnout.”

“We don’t just go to blues shows, we help the community,” said Jackie Foster, TK Soul’s vice president. “Everything we do is for the community.”

The club was formed after T.K. Soul, a Louisiana-based soul singer, asked the women who frequented his shows to form a fan club in Vicksburg.

They did that two years ago, and now the fan club is a civic club.

Every Wednesday, the women cook and serve food at the Salvation Army on Mission 66.

This year, the fan club will sponsor a member to be certified in preparing foods by offering to pay for the classes needed for the certification.

Group members work closely with the Salvation Army in buying school uniforms for school children.

“We try to raise money so we can try to do things for the community,” said Copeland.

Though the club raises money to help those in need, club members reach into their own pockets when help is needed, like not too long ago when a Vicksburg woman’s house burned.

“It’s a must that you are willing to help the community,” said Copeland on membership requirements.

The group of nine women ages 40 to 60 was especially active in community service during Christmas holidays, Copeland said.

They donated a holiday meal at Thanksgiving and bought gifts for two Salvation Army Angel Tree participants at Christmastime.

The group’s most anticipated goal is to establish a scholarship fund for Vicksburg students.
