The 8-year-old boy who was transferred to University Medical Center in Jackson Friday night due to cuts sustained in a one-vehicle wreck — which also sent four other children and a woman to the local hospital — has been released and is at home recovering, said his mother, Laquanta Carson.

Anita Adams, 31, 173 Deer Ridge Road, hit a tree with her Chevrolet Silverado pickup-truck on Warriors Trail Friday night around 6:19 p.m. near Mount Alban Road with five children riding in the truck bed, said police. Carson said all five children, 7 to 13, were ejected from the truck bed.

Along with Adams, the four children treated and released from River Region Medical Center on Friday night were: Quin-Darius Driver, 13, and Ariell Connor, 7, both 173 Deer Ridge Road, D-Juan Coleman, 13, 114 Abraham Drive, and Jessica Bell, 9, 124 Abraham Drive.

The one who was transferred is Michael Carson, 114 Abraham Drive. He was treated for  a deep cut on his knee, said his mother. He was released early Saturday morning and was recovering at home this morning with stitches and staples in both legs.

“He had the worst injuries. He had one cut all the way down to the bone, ” said Carson, who added another son, Coleman, also received stitches in his leg following the wreck.

No citations have been issued as of this morning. Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies would visit with Adams again today, as well as inspect the truck and roadway once more, to determine if Adams was driving in a careless manner.

There is no law in Mississippi specifically restricting motorists from transporting passengers in the bed of a truck, said Pace. He noted neither speed nor alcohol was believed to have contributed to the wreck.

Carson said Adams told her two blown tires caused her to careen off the roadway. Whatever the case, Carson said her children will not be riding in any truck bed again.

“Never again,” she said. “It scared me to death. I could have lost my boys.”
