LELAND — Michael Albert Koury died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 81.

Mr. Koury was born in Natchez to Joseph A. and Eugenia Koury. He graduated from Leland High School and attended Mississippi State University. With his wife, he operated Koury’s clothing store in Leland from 1957 until 1987.

He had lived in Jackson for the past six years and worked at his son’s business, Paul Anthony’s Market.

He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church in Leland.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Cleary of San Antonio, Texas, and Madelyn K. Rice of Ridgeland; four sons, Dr. A. Michael Koury and Peter G. Koury, both of Jackson, Paul A. Koury of Madison and Phillip J. Koury of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Monsignor Joseph A. Koury of Clinton and Peter A. Koury of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. today at St. James Catholic Church. Burial followed at Leland-Stoneville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home of Leland.

Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
