The fights are set and ready to rumble. The six-bout “Gloves Up, Guns Down” boxing card is tonight at the Vicksburg Convention Center, beginning at 7.
The headliner is a women’s match between former WIBA and WIBF world middleweight champion Leatitia Robinson (15-0) against the WBC and WIBA No. 1 ranked contender Ijeoma Egbunine (15-2).
Egbunine, a native of Nigeria who now trains in Marietta, Ga., rolled into Vicksburg for Friday’s weigh-in at LD’s restaurant. She said she’s glad to have a shot at Robinson, who two years ago was the undisputed middleweight champ but has been out since then because of a shoulder injury.
“I’ve been wanting to fight her for some time and she wanted to, so we were able to seal the deal,” Egbunine said after weighing in at 170 pounds. The bout, which is sponsored by James Dixon’s Showdown Boxing Promotions, will be sanctioned by the Mississippi Athletic Conmmission as a super middleweight fight.
Vicksburg businessman Johnny L. Reynolds, who was in attendance at the weigh-in, is glad to see boxing back in the River City.
“People are really excited about this. At first, they were hesitant, but tickets have been selling good now. We’ve got a lot people coming in from Chicago,” Reynolds said.
Robinson is from Chicago as is the other co-main event attraction in middleweight Louis “Knock” Turner. Last August, Turner (12-2) fought for the vacant North American Boxing Council middleweight title but lost a close decision to Anthony Greenidge.
“I just needed to get refocused after that loss and the one to Angel Hernandez,” said Turner, who is promoted by Don King. Turner is a two-time Golden Gloves national champion, winning titles in 2002 and 2005. He will fight another tough veteran in Darrell Boone of Atlanta.
The undercard will feature Pancho Moncivais, the current Golden Gloves Super Heavyweight national champion, against Ricardo Clayton in his pro debut; a welterweight rematch between Thomas Dar Dar (4-1) andMiguel Alfaro; and a a superheavyweight bout between Andrew Greeley and Michael Hamilton.
