Ned Mitchell, left, and Christina Kennedy clean gravestones in the National Cemetery at the Vicksburg National Military Park as part of Park Day Saturday. About 30 people volunteered to help clean gravestones, restore the cemetery gate and paint cannons. It was Mitchell’s and Kennedy’s first year to volunteer. There are 17,000 tombstones for Union soldiers in the cemetery established by an act of Congress in 1866.
