A Hinds Community College student is believed to have had a seizure Monday before careening his pickup into a convenience store parking lot, being ejected when the truck hit a gas pump barrier and sustaining fatal injuries.

Darryl C. Nervis, 20, 8091 Halls Ferry Road, was taken from the Chevron Kangaroo gas station on U.S. 61 South at Iowa Boulevard to River Region Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:58 p.m.

Warren County Coroner Doug Husky said Nervis died of head injuries after being thrown from the truck when it hit a concrete stanchion.

Nervis was driving alone in his 1990 Chevrolet Silverado pickup on Iowa Boulevard near Wal-Mart SuperCenter when, witnesses said, the vehicle suddenly sped erratically into the convenience store parking lot. The truck hit a barrier at two pumps, skidded and smashed into the barrier in front of two others, said Officer Eric Paymon of the Vicksburg Police Department.

Nervis was ejected from the passenger side window, Paymon, said, adding Nervis did not appear to be wearing a seat belt.

Authorities said family members indicated Nervis had a medical condition they believe was the cause of the wreck.

Although other vehicles and people were in the area, none was struck, said Sgt. Jackie Johnson.

Nervis was the son of Brenda Nervis and Julius Nervis of Vicksburg and was a member of Faith Christian Center on Main Street. He was studying criminal justice at Hinds.

“He loved his family and always wanted his family to be together,” said his father. “He always had good things to say about people.”

It was the first fatal wreck in Vicksburg this year. Four people have died in wrecks in Warren County outside the city limits this year.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home will have charge of funeral services.
