After cleaning and bandaging a leg wound Thursday, Georgia Lynn, director of the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society, picks clean the hoof of a mare she and others at the shelter have been caring for since it was seized by the shelter and Warren County deputies Feb. 12. Society board secretary Kelly Stevens is holding on to the mare to help keep it still while  volunteer Jessica Goodson looks on. The 4-year-old mare’s leg had been injured at least eight weeks before she was taken from behind an abandoned mobile home where she was tied without water, grass or food. “I figure if she fought that long to live she needs a fighter’s name,” Lynn said. Lynn said Cherokee was in the worst condition she’d ever seen. The mare has gained about 75 pounds since arriving at the shelter, and her medical bills are between $800 and $1,000. Lynn said the shelter needs cash and donations of cedar shavings, gauze, bandages, adhesive tape and wound dressings. The humane society number is 601-636-6631.
