MADISON — A grand slam by Madison Central’s Josh Bouldin put Warren Central in a deep hole and C.J. Jordan’s walk-off shot in the fifth inning ended things for the Vikings at the Madison Central Regional.
The two home runs accounted for six of Madison Central’s 11 runs in the 11-0 romp that was called in the fifth by run rule. The loss ends Warren Central’s first season under new coach Josh Abraham at 10-20. Madison Central (20-4) advances to face the Southaven-South Panola winner next week in the Class 5A quarterfinals.
“Madison Central swings it very well, better than a lot of the teams we faced this year,” Abraham said.
The Vikings did get their first postseason win since 2006, when they ended Starkville’s season Friday night at Madison with a come-from-behind 10-9 win.
“These guys got better with each week and I have to credit our seniors for setting the table. They brought a good approach to the team,” Abraham said.
For the Jaguars, who belted out 13 hits, a third trip to Trustmark Park and the 5A finals could be in their future if they hit like they did in the regional. In two games, Madison run-ruled both Starkville and Warren Central in two five-inning games. The Jaguars outscored their opponents 23-2 in the two games.
“We knew Warren Central was down in their pitching, but we were prepared and swung at good pitches,” Madison Central coach Gregg Perry said. “If you do that on every given day, you’ll be successful. So far in the playoffs we’ve beaten two pretty good teams in five innings. We shown we’ve got power through the lineup. I know that well from practice because we lose a bunch of baseballs every day in batting practice.”
Warren Central’s highlight came in the game’s first at- bat when Darrick White doubled into the left-center gap. White got to third base on a one-out grounder to second and then was left stranded when Madison Central starter Matt Peters induced a third straight infield grounder to end the inning.
“We struggled to get the big hit. We just left too many runners in scoring position,” Abraham said.
White, however, was the only Viking to reach third against Peters, who scattered five hits. Three of the hits came in the fourth with the Vikings down 7-0. Adam Lee, who led off with a single, was erased on a 6-4-3 double play. Dylan Wooten and Beau Wallace followed with hits, but were left on base after Peters got Jimmie Elliott to hit back to the mound for the third out.
The Jaguars had plenty of big hits, starting with Jared Rutland’s RBI triple in the second for a 1-0 lead. Rutland added a two-out single in the third to make it 3-0. Bouldin then gave Madison a seven-run cushion when he parked Colby Key’s offering well over the left-center wall for a grand slam and a 7-0 lead.
The lone error by the Vikings helped set up Madison’s bid to end the game in five.
Alex Collum doubled in Josh Crowder to make it 9-0 and Jordan ended it with his two-run blast to left.
Brayden Jones paced the Jaguars with three hits, all singles. Rutland, Bouldin and Crowder all had two hits.
