A 14-year employee of the Warren County Tax Collector’s Office will fill its top spot, at least on an interim basis.
Antonia Flaggs-Jones, 37, was the unanimous choice of members of the Warren County Board of Supervisors this morning. Jones has held the title clerk’s and deputy clerk’s posts since December 1994.
Flaggs-Jones, who beat out six other applicants eligible for the job, holds a business administration degree from Jackson State University and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Belhaven College in Jackson.
The tax collector’s office receives payments of property taxes and fees on real estate and vehicles for the county, and, by contract, for the City of Vicksburg.
The office came open in May when incumbent Pat Simrall retired on April 30 after holding the post since 1993 and after 39 years in county government.
Flaggs-Jones, a niece to 20-year state Rep. George Flaggs, will hold the office until a special election Nov. 3. The winner will hold the office until the 2011 state and county election cycle. Contests for seats representing District 3 and District 5 on the Warren County Election Commission will also be on that ballot and might be joined by the circuit court judgeship to be vacated May 31 by Judge Frank Vollor.
Gov. Haley Barbour may appoint a successor to the local bench in advance of his Vollor’s effective retirement date and set an election for the judgeship that includes Warren, Issaquena and Sharkey counties.
