All fourth-graders toured the Vicksburg National Military Park and traveled aboard the Sweet Olive on the Mississippi River. Parent chaperones were Pamela Brooks, Patricia Doss and Renee Norris.

• Jenny Karel’s first-graders, along with Jennifer Gaines’ kindergarten students, ate cheese quesadillas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

• Janice Strickland presented a magnetism lesson to first-grade students of Jenny Karel and Tara Bridgers.

• Sandra Barnes’ students made Mother’s Day and colored umbrellas as part of a discussion of May flowers. Diane Beauman’s students placed flowers they had planted as seeds into fingerpainted flower pots for Mother’s Day.

• Beth Haskin’s students studied yaks and zebras as part of an alphabet study. They also created Mother’s Day cards and crafts.

• Barbara Hill’s 4K students celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a pinata. Gordon Wilkerson was named class VIP; he shared ice cream with the students.

• The school participated in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon by riding bikes and tricycles in an effort to raise money for the children’s research hospital.

• Parent volunteers Laura Dow Madison, Mary Sullivan and Ruth Wilkerson made breakfast for instructors in observance of Teacher Appreciation Week.

Dana Road

• Second- and third-grade GATES students visited the Imax Theatre and Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

• Vic and Trina Johnson, PTO members, provided breakfast, catfish and happies for faculty and staff members during Teacher Appreciation Week. Parent volunteers were Terry Burns, Marilyn Hendrix and Annette Kindhart.

• Faculty and staff members presented a talent show for the student body.

• Pre-K students of Linda Hanks and Jennifer Funches presented a circus for parents.

• Second- and third-graders are performing a standing long-jump skills test during physical education classes.

First Presbyterian

• Tricia Brogdon helped Gloria Sullivan’s kindergartners make fish-plate aquariums after a study of the ocean. Javi Torres was named Student of the Week. Brogdon also helped pre-kindergartners and kindergartners make Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts.

• After reading “A Fort to Share,” Shannon Bell’s pre-kindergartners built a fort where they enjoyed a story and snack.

• Lynnette Smith’s 3-year-olds made vases for Mother’s Day and walruses after a study of arctic animals. They treated their teacher to lunch as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Kat Neihaus was named Student of the Week.

• Two-year-old classes of Teri Conerly and Jessica Wicker read “The Carrot Seed” and discussed the process of planting seeds to make plants grow.

• After a study of weather, Kari Dupree’s toddlers bubble-painted clouds and observed a tornado in a bottle.

Jacob’s Ladder

• Students visited the Delhi Safari Park, where they fed animals, then ate lunch at Burger King.

• Robin Smith, Misty Grantham, Matthew Grogan and Matt McKay have practiced Mondays and Wednesdays in preparation for the state swim meet at Keesler Air Force Base this weekend. Grantham worked at Just Duett Sports, where she organized shorts, vacuumed and dusted.

• Sharon Andrews led students in a bowling activity and laps at the YMCA walking court.

• Students are participating in the Soil and Water Conservation’s poster contest, “Dig It! The Secret of the Soil.”

• As part of a study of shapes, listening skills and following instructions, Debbie Johnson helped students make Mother’s Day floral arrangements.

Porters Chapel

• Elementary students were rewarded with a SuperKids field day after raising more than $2,000 for the American Lung Association in Mississippi.  Incentive prizes were awarded to those students raising at least $20. Cody Bryant was named Top SuperKid for collecting the most money, $275, and received a DVD player.

Redwood

• Pledge leaders for the week were Justin Stewart, Zoie Cantin, Victoria Davenport, Andrew Johnson, Dylan Pettway, T’Mia Qualls, Caitlin Strickland, Cameron Pratt, Chucky Jones and Jessiah Wilson.

• Parent volunteers Missy Stockstill, Julie Parks, Debbie Jeter, Lisa Bolewareand Daphne Turner provided treats in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Sandra Harris, representing the PTO, presented teachers with Southern Belle T-shirts. Chris O’Brien of Sonic distributed goody bags to teachers and staff. Principal Charles Hanks grilled hamburgers for the staff.

• Kathryn Hullum and Misty Carlisle, fifth-grade instructor and assistant, hosted tours of the district’s portable planetarium, where students learned about constellations.

• MCT2 tests will continue through Thursday.

Sherman Avenue

• As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, PTA members provided various treats for faculty and staff throughout the week, including breakfast, candy bags, dessert, thank-you cards and soup and salad.

• As part of a study of the solar system, Cheryl Ricks’ kindergartners read stories about the sun, moon, planets and stars. Those with good behavior participated in “astronaut training,” competing in games of skill, speed and balance.

• Kindergartners honored as Students of the Month for April were Tyriq Allen, Michael Bell, Temira Thomas, Ricardo Garcia, Mya Powell, Ashley Bracey, Sarah Grace Jabour and Gabrielle Gibson.

• Dr. Jane Smith led a study of the five senses as part of the Science Stars enrichment program.

South Park

•  Students who acted as servers in the Mother’s Day tea hosted by kindergartners were Moriah Hixson, Kayleigh Thorpe, Rachel Majoria, Morgan Trest, Will Martin, LaDarius Butler, Chelsie Scallions, Raven London, Karneshia Green, Caitlin Maxwell and Kori Screws.

• Kindergarten classes hosted a Mother’s Day tea and programs for their mothers.

St. Aloysius

• Grades 6-12 attended a Celebration of Service Mass in the gym, followed by a service awards ceremony.

• Parents of 11th-graders attended a meeting to discuss 2009-2010 seniors. Parents of students beginning seventh grade in the fall also attended a meeting.

• Regular classes ended for seniors on May 6.

• Band members attended the annual band banquet at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

• Faculty members Michele Townsend, Bettye Kelly, Rebecca Beauman, Joan Thornton, Virginia Campbell and Liz Fletcher attended the Curriculum Mapping workshop.

St. Francis

• Brenda Kalusche’s third-graders dissected owl pellets as part of a science unit on living things. They created acrostic poems featuring Wilbur from “Charlotte’s Web” for display in the classroom.

• Preschoolers who participated in the April Book It! program were Trace Daily, Kendal Elqadi, Madison Hedrick, Reese King, Keely Ramshur, Kate Simrall, Layne Sparks and Tristan Wilbanks. After a study of the letter V, the class constructed and erupted a volcano.

• To conclude a study of animals, Zena Phillips’ kindergartners visited Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo in Monroe.

• Ladies of Sodality members prayed the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary with first- and second-graders in the chapel.

• Fifth-graders celebrated Civil War Day by dressing as people from the era and presenting stories to visiting elementary classes. The students also visited the Vicksburg National Military Park and McRaven Tour Home. Fourth-graders visited the park also.

Vicksburg High

• Senior exam schedule is as follows: Monday — 7:40-9:25 a.m., first period; and 9:30-11:15 a.m., second period; Tuesday — 7:40-9:25 a.m., third period; and 9:30-11:15 a.m., fourth period; Wednesday — 7:40-9:25 a.m., fifth period; and 9:30-11:15 a.m., sixth period; Thursday — 7:40-9:25 a.m., seventh period.

• Senior awards ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at VHS auditorium. Seniors awarded scholarships should provide Patricia Winters with official notification by Friday to have scholarlships announced at graduation.

• Commencement practice, including the distribution of caps and gowns, will be at 9 a.m. May 27 at Vicksburg Memorial Stadium. Graduation will begin at 7 p.m. May 28 at the stadium. Those needing caps and gowns for baccalaureate church services should have the church submit a letter to Derrick Reed, principal, naming those seniors involved.

• VHS will host summer school; registration will be 8 a.m.-noon June 5 and June 8 in the school cafeteria. Classes will be June 10-July 22 from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. daily. Cost is $300 for one credit, $375 for out-of-district students and $750 for out-of-state students. Approval of principals/headmasters or a letter of consent with signatures from schools outside the district are required to enroll.

• Varsity football cheerleaders performed at Covenant Health & Rehab and Shady Lawn Nursing Home to kick off  National Nursing Home Week. 

Vicksburg Intermediate

• Pledge leaders for the week were Dominique Tunstall, Chandler Luke, Leola Jones, Henry Banks and Brianna Clark.

• MCT2 testing will be completed Thursday with make-up tests on Friday. 

• Accelerated Reader champs for April were LaShonda Smith’s third grade, Tee Tee Braxton’s fourth grade, Alice Jones’ fifth grade and Chastity Patterson’s sixth grade. 

• Fifth-grade students of Tommie Allen and Tammy McCurley planted flowers in pots and made handprint cards with poems for Mother’s Day.

• Gator Swamp Meet spring carnival for parents, family and friends will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the school.

Vicksburg Junior High

• Honor Society induction will be Monday.

• Retirement reception for Coach Linda Powell will be from 2:30 until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

• Awards program will be May 20; eighth-graders will assemble at 8:30 a.m. and seventh-graders will convene at 1 p.m.

• Gator Club Field Day will be May 22.

• Exams will be May 27-29.

Warren Central High

• Yearbooks are on sale for $60 on a first come, first serve basis.

• Boys’ soccer team tryouts will be at 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday on the school’s front field.

• Student Council officers for 2009-2010 will be Jamel Dagher, president; Laura Benson, vice president; Kimberly Hodges, secretary; and Daysha Johnson, junior class president.

• Seniors must pay $3 in Office A before Friday to help with the cost of Friday’s senior class picnic.

Warren Central Intermediate

• Field Day class winners were Kimberly Bolls’ third grade, Tracey Shells’ fourth grade, Gloria Blake’s fifth grade and Kelli Dispenza’s sixth grade.

Warren Central Junior High

• Seventh- and eighth-grade Girls Club members sponsored a sleep-in for members on Friday.

• Eighth-grade cheerleaders participated in an MCT pep rally at Sherman Avenue Elementary on Monday.

• Students wore favorite team jerseys on Monday as part of a “teaming up to score well” on the MCT activity.

• Spring Choir concert will be held Tuesday.

Warrenton

• Top Accelerated Readers for the year were Brandon Cabezas, Lexi Wester, Kameron Batty, Madison Wilkerson, Danielle Phelps, Deon’tree Smith, Demetrus Harris, Jon Bantugan, Zachary Moore, Taylor Shiers, Jacob Cochran, Shunterrance Walton, Kishuna Flowers, Char’Kela Anderson, Leiana Thornell, Robbie Love and Caroline Williams.

• Top sellers in the World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser were Jaylen Armstrong, kindergarten; Alexis Whitehead, first grade; Ricky Alexander, second grade; Christian Chandler, third grade; Brittany Cooper, fourth grade; Race McCool, fifth grade; and D.J. Crooks, sixth grade.

• Montie Wedel’s students who are participating in the All Kids Can… Create exhibit are Isabelle Hagood, Lazerick Brown and Kevin Parrish. They received certificates and their work can be viewed at www.artsonia.com, the world’s largest student art museum.
