An internal investigation by the Columbus Police Department into of its officers at the center of an incident last week at Vicksburg National Military Park will wrap up Tuesday, police said.

While the inquiry has concluded, the results will be released following a closed session of the Columbus City Council during a scheduled meeting at 5 p.m.

“This is a personnel matter and will be in executive session and is not open to the public,” a release from the department said Thursday.

Four officers were reported by a visitor to park rangers for playing loud music and using flashers to deter visitors from approaching  the police cruiser in which they were riding.

No citation was issued to the officers, park officials said, because the matter was treated as an educational stop that asks a visitor to cease inappropriate behavior.

The four officers were part of a contingent of law enforcement officers from around the state in Vicksburg last week for a conference of S.T.O.R.M., or Sobriety Trained Officers Representing Mississippi, made up of more than 200 agencies who convene on issues pertaining to DUI detection and apprehension.

Chief Joseph St. John confirmed the four officers approved in April by the city council to attend the event as the same involved in the inquiry — Cpl. Spence Wallingford and officers Wade Beard, Heath Beard and Robert Walker.

The four are on administrative leave, St. John said. Reports of a female officer spotted inside the cruiser were confirmed Thursday by St. John, who said the woman worked for another law enforcement agency and was the fiancee of one of the Columbus officers.
