News now: Warren County deputy dies in crash

A Warren County deputy was killed early Sunday morning in a one-car wreck on U.S. 61 South north of the Carpenters Union Hall.

Tom Wilson, a deputy since early 2008 who was a Vicksburg police officer for 16 years before that, was on his way to a call  when his car apparently hit a pocket of standing water on the four-lane highway, hydroplaned and flipped, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

“Typical Tom Wilson, he heard a 911-dispatcher checking on an ambulance that had been dispatched south of the site and he offered to check on their well-being,” Pace said. “Within minutes, calls came in that a deputy’s car had overturned.”

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will conduct the investigation and reconstruction, Pace said.

Wilson’s brother, Hinds County Deputy Judd Wilson, said Tom Wilson would have celebrated his 40th birthday on May 26. He was a graduate of Warren Central High School and the University of Southern Mississippi.

In addition to his brother, Tom Wilson is survived by his wife. Betty, one child and a step-child, and his parents Tom Jr. and Shelby Wilson of Roxie.
