A comeback player of the year award isn’t handed out by the Southeastern Conference among its many postseason honors. So Jordan Henry will have to be happy with just being named to the All-Conference team.
Henry, a junior right fielder and former Vicksburg High star, was Ole Miss’ only first-team All-SEC selection in voting announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Teammates Scott Bittle and Drew Pomeranz, both pitchers, were picked to the second team. Mississippi State pitcher Nick Routt was selected for the All-Freshman team.
Although Ole Miss won a share of the SEC regular-season championship for the first time since 1977, Henry said he wasn’t surprised at the team’s lack of representation on the league’s postseason awards lists.
“That was the thing that was so special. We had so many players contributing up and down the order. Everybody was effective. Anyone could have made that list from our team,” said Henry, who will lead the third-seeded Rebels into their SEC Tournament opener with Georgia today at 1:30 p.m. Henry’s pick as an All-SEC player caps a terrific junior year and is the latest high in a rollercoaster career at Ole Miss. The 2007 SEC Freshman of the Year slumped badly in his sophomore season, hitting just .292 — 84 points lower than the previous year. He rebounded nicely this spring, though. Batting in the leadoff spot, he led the SEC with 49 walks and set a single-season school record with 33 stolen bases. He also scored a career-high 64 runs and hit .342 with 27 RBIs.
“It means a lot. It’s always nice to get back on track,” Henry said. “I went through a tough time last year. I felt like I started hitting the ball better toward the SEC Tournament and continued it through the summer and fall.”
