Gas prices jump back up

Published 12:00 am Monday, June 1, 2009

After 10 days of remarkably low prices, gas in Vicksburg shot up this morning by 20 cents or more per gallon.

Pumps at Murphy Express on Pemberton Square Boulevard, the area’s newest station, and at least two outlets at Kangaroo-branded convenience stores sold for $2.25 by about 7:30 a.m. Murphy appeared to be last week’s pacesetter in an apparent price-matching event that pulled down prices at Kangaroos — the area’s market share leader — to less than $2.05.

This morning’s increases are more in line with retailers’ true cost for gasoline, but were still below state averages.

Regular unleaded averaged $2.35 in Mississippi today, with Jackson coming in at $2.33. Nationwide, fuel prices for regular gas averaged $2.51, up about 20 cents in the past month and 9 cents since Tuesday.
