When it comes to soccer, Vicksburg is all-star city.
Five players from Warren County, including four from Vicksburg High, will suit up for today’s Mississippi Association of Coaches soccer all-star games at Hinds Community College.
The four VHS all-stars — Diari Gilliam and Amelia Hyde in the 10 a.m. girls’ game, and Ryan Ferrington and Patrick Parker in the boys’ game at noon — are more than any other school will have. Warren Central’s Julie Waddle will join Gilliam and Hyde on the North squad for the girls’ game.
All five county players had standout high school careers.
Gilliam scored 86 goals in six seasons as a starter, and was named the Vicksburg Post’s co-player of the year with teammate Rebecca Wilson last season. Hyde had 10 goals and 10 assists last season, while Waddle — another six-year starter for WC — had 11 goals and five assists.
Parker and Ferrington provided plenty of punch for Vicksburg over the years, helping the team reach the Class 5A championship game in 2005 and the Class 4A semifinals in 2008. Parker only had four goals and four assists in the 2008-09 season because of injuries and a larger role on the defensive end. Ferrington led the Gators with six goals.
