Anshe Chesed Temple, built in 1870, was the oldest in the state when it was torn down in the 1980s. Located on Cherry Street between China and Clay, the temple underwent renovation around 1900, the two towers and a new facade being built on the front of the structure. The Temple was made available to the Baptist, Catholic and Methodist congregations when their churches burned or were demolished. The photo, taken in the 1950s, is from the Old Court House collection.
Historic photos taken in and around Vicksburg are featured on Sundays in The Vicksburg Post. Many of the photos are from the J. Mack Moore Collection at the Old Court House Museum. Though not all photos were taken by Mr. Moore, they are part of the collection given to the museum by longtime Vicksburg Post managing editor Charles J. Faulk. Appropriate photos from the public will also be accepted and published. To submit a photo, contact Karen Gamble at 636-4545.
