Devin Britton is already an NCAA champion. Now, he’s making strides to add a Wimbledon trophy to his resume.
The Ole Miss freshman beat New Zealand’s Sebastian Lavie 6-4, 7-5 today to advance to the third round of the Junior Wimbledon tournament.
“Today it was all about two guys with big serves. He played well. I managed to take my chances in each set and come through. I’ve never played my next opponent before, but I’m enjoying playing on grass and after winning Roehampton, people tell me, I’ve won something like eight in a row on grass,” Britton told the Wimbledon.org blog.
Britton, a Brandon native, will next face either Brazilian Tiago Fernandes on Brazil on Wednesday.
Fernandes outlasted France’s Julien Obry 7-6 (7), 6-7 (7), 6-4 this morning.
Britton continued to dominate on his first serve, winning 92 percent of the points and recording 22 aces against Lavie. In a first-round win over Shuichi Sekiguchi on Monday, Britton won 80 percent of his first serve points.
In the two matches, Britton has spent less than two hours on the court. He needed 63 minutes to beat Lavie, and dispatched the No. 7 seed Sekiguchi 6-4, 6-0 in just 44 minutes on Monday.
Lasy week, Britton won the AEGON International Junior Championships singles and doubles titles, one of the key tuneups for Wimbledon. He is also competing in doubles at Wimbledon with Jordan Cox. The two teamed up to win the AEGON doubles title.
The Junior Wimbledon doubles tournament began today. Britton and Cox will play fellow Americans Harry Fowler and Johannes Robert Van Overbeek on Wednesday.
