The Mississippi Braves’ post all-star surge ran out of gas on Friday night.
Jonathan Lucroy’s solo homer in the top of the seventh inning broke a tie and capped a comeback from an early three-run deficit as the Huntsville Stars beat the M-Braves 4-3 at Trustmark Park.
The M-Braves had won two in a row following the Southern League all-star break, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning on Friday. RBI singles by Eric Campbell, Travis Jones and Matt Young sparked the rally.
Huntsville answered with a single run in the fifth inning, then tied it with two in the sixth. M-Braves reliever Tim Gustafson surrendered two bases-loaded walks with two outs to bring in the tying runs.
Lucroy’s homer with one out in the seventh put Huntsville ahead, 4-3, and the bullpen kept the M-Braves in check the rest of the way.
Four Huntsville relievers combined to allow two hits and one walk over the last four innings. Mike McClendon (4-2) got the win, while Rob Wooten earned his fourth save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Mississippi didn’t get a runner past second base after the second inning and only had three hits the rest of the way.
Gustafson (1-1) took the loss for the M-Braves. He walked four in 1 2/3 innings.
Young and Willie Cabrera had two hits apiece for the M-Braves. Cabrera’s triple in the second inning extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
