Smokies toast M-Braves in extras|Minor league baseball

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — After rallying from two runs down over the final three innings of the game, the Mississippi Braves dropped game one of this five-game series at Tennessee, 3-2 in 10 innings. The M-Braves got two hits out of Brandon Hicks and Jason Heyward and two RBIs from Freddie Freeman, but they couldn’t break through as game one went to the home team.

In the bottom of the 10th, James Adduci led off with a single and Marquez Smith moved him into scoring position with a bunt. Adduci moved up to third on Tyler Colvin’s single and he scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch by Kevin Gunderson.

Jonathan Mota led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored the game’s first run on a Marquez Smith sacrifice fly to put the Smokies on top. They added an unearned run in the third to push the lead to 2-0. Wellington Castillo reached on an error and later scored on a single by Mota. After three, the Smokies led 2-0.

The M-Braves got on the board in the seventh, when Hicks singled, moved to third on a Heyward double and scored on a Freeman sacrifice fly. That trio came through again in the ninth. Hicks singled, moved to third on a single by Heyward and scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly by Freeman. Heading to the bottom of the ninth, the score was knotted at two.

Edgar Osuna got the start for the M-Braves, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits over seven innings. Bryan Dumesnil and Jerome Gamble each threw one scoreless inning. Gunderson took his second loss after giving up the game-winning run in the 10th.

Andrew Cashner started for the Smokies and tossed six scoreless innings. Casey Lambert gave up a run in an inning and Marco Carrillo threw a shutout inning. Jake Muyco allowed a run in the ninth and Alex Maestri got his third win with a shutout tenth.

The Braves and Smokies will play game two of his five-game series tonight at Smokies Park at 6:15 p.m.
