Protested tax bills upheld by county

Values assigned to parcels owned or leased by seven companies who objected to this year’s land rolls will remain the same.
Two casinos, four apartment complexes and a closed restaurant had asked their tax burdens to be lowered as part of the annual process of assigning values and setting tax rates, expected during the county’s budget hearing Sept. 8.
The properties were Riverwalk Casino, DiamondJacks Casino, Mission Ridge, River Hills, Magnolia Commons and Parkwood South apartment complexes and Realty Income Corporation, which owns the former Ryan’s Family Steakhouse on Pemberton Square Boulevard.
“I can’t see any reason to make that kind of adjustment,” Deputy Tax Assessor Jim Agent said repeatedly Monday as the board concurred with each recommendation with little comment.
Overall, property rolls grew by 5.9 percent this year, to $3,343,404,905, due largely to new high-end commercial development including the new casino and three hotels that were completed in 2008.
Supervisors also approved nine reductions and three increases to the personal property rolls, with a net effect of $26,474.
