The Lady Vikes committed eight errors Tuesday, leading to six unearned runs and an 8-3 loss to Ridgeland. WC (1-1) has committed 14 errors in its first two games this season.
“Our errors just killed us,” WC coach Lucy Young said. “Errors from the very get-go. We gave them their very first run and four others. We’ve got a whole new team out here and we’re going to make mistakes. It’s nothing we can’t fix.”
WC did have its share of defensive highlights on Tuesday. It turned two double plays on fly balls and got two fielder’s choices on balls hit to the outfield.
Three first-inning errors spotted Ridgeland a 2-0 lead in the first inning, however, and two more errors in the seventh blew open a close game.
Leading 3-2, the Lady Titans loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. Kelly Jarvis extended the lead with an RBI single, then Kenya Harris hit a sharp grounder to second. WC’s Alexis Patterson fielded the ball cleanly but sailed the throw over the catcher’s head, allowing two runs to score. Another error later in the inning also plated a run. In all, Ridgeland (2-1) scored five runs — four unearned — to take an 8-2 lead.
Patterson finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Megan McCullough was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and an RBI. For Ridgeland, Jarvis was 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
