Franklin County swung some hot bats Tuesday afternoon in dispatching the Vicksburg Missy Gators 15-2 in six innings.
The run-rule loss was a step back for the Missy Gators (3-4) after playing well in the Lady Vikes Invitational last Saturday. They won two games and finished second in the six-team tournament.
Against Franklin County, Vicksburg was without its top hitter and shortstop Claire Ray, who was out with the flu. Blake DeRossette filled in nicely on defense, but VHS had no offensive spark and was outhit 23-4 by the visiting Lady Bulldogs (7-2).
Every Franklin County starter had at least one hit. Allison Hauer and Desiree Buie both went 4-for-4.
“This doesn’t happen every time, but tonight we had a good night hitting the ball.” Franklin County coach Dana Smith said. “We do have a lot of older girls on this team. We start four seniors and four juniors and they can bring a lot of strength and speed to the plate.”
Franklin County had six extra-base hits, including three inside-the-park home runs. None was bigger than a three-run shot by Keke Collins that keyed a six-run second inning and broke open a 2-2 game.
Vicksburg’s Lea Davies had tripled in two runs in the bottom of the first to plate Tira Erwin and Kelli Brewer. But in the second, Franklin County sent 12 batters to the plate, with 10 getting hits. The six runs put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 8-2.
Vicksburg, meanwhile, got just two hits over its last five at-bats. Franklin added two runs in the fourth and five in the sixth to go up 15-2.
Vintrice Briggs had a two-run triple in the fourth and Hauer had a solo home run in the sixth.
Davies’ two hits led Vicksburg. Brewer and Paige Bowser had the Missy Gators’ other hits.
