The M-Braves, who have been eliminated from the Southern League playoff race, finish with a five-game series at Carolina beginning on Thursday. Mississippi can finish third in the South Division and no worse than .500 for the second half by winning one game against the last-place Mudcats.

The M-Braves improved to 33-30 in the second half, and 19-16 at Trustmark Park, with Tuesday’s win. Mejia’s two-run single keyed a three-run third inning that put the Braves ahead for good. Heyward, who also had an RBI single in the third, drove in the game’s final run with a single in the fifth inning.

Osuna (4-3), who has split time between Mississippi and Class A Myrtle Beach this season, was making his first appearance for the M-Braves since Aug. 4 and got his first win for them since July 15. He allowed an unearned run in the first inning, along with a pair of hits and a run in the third, but was otherwise sharp. He had six strikeouts in the first three innings and pitched out of a couple of minor jams to keep the M-Braves in front.

Kevin Gunderon pitched a perfect eighth before running into trouble in the ninth, and Stephen Marek got the final out for his second save of the season.

Brandon Hicks doubled, walked and scored two runs for the M-Braves and Heyward finished 3-for-4.

Jose Yepez had a pair of doubles for West Tenn, Ezequiel Carrera had two hits and scored a run, and Mel Stocker had three hits.
