Kruz Federick scored PCA’s only touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

The Eagles not only lost the game, but another batch of players including leading rusher Jay Wiley.

Wiley injured his knee on a run in the third quarter. PCA coach Bill Fleming said it was an apparent ACL tear and Wiley could be lost for the season. Wiley had rushed for over 300 yards in PCA’s first two games.

He was one of several PCA starters who left Friday’s game with injuries, just a week after a half-dozen players went out in a win over Prairie View. Tailback Montana McDaniel (arm) and lineman Caze Brewer (leg) were among this week’s wounded.

“We got hit pretty hard again tonight,” Fleming said, adding that he was trying to look to history to find a bright spot heading into next week’s district opener against University Christian.

“Two years ago Porters Chapel went over to River Oaks and got beat 57-6, then came back and won six straight games and made the playoffs,” Fleming said. “We know the season’s not over yet.”

Trinity 40, Briarfield 19

Jacob Hopkins had a big night for Briarfield, but R.J. Fleming had a better one for Trinity.

Fleming ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, Givanni Dent threw two touchdown passes and had a 1-yard TD run, and Trinity (3-0, 1-0 District 6-A) jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead en route to a thrashing of the Rebels.

Hopkins was 5-of-9 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 146 yards and another touchdown. Ridge Creech caught four passes for 210 yards and two long touchdowns — an 80-yarder in the third quarter and a 75-yarder in the fourth — for Briarfield (2-1, 0-1).

Briarfield had 410 yards of total offense, but turned it over three times.

Hinds AHS 26, Crystal Springs 7

Darius Newton ran for 233 yards and two touchdowns — his second 200-yard effort in three games this season — and Hinds AHS (2-1) rolled over Crystal Springs.

Newton scored on a 30-yard run in the first quarter and a 54-yard run in the third. He carried the ball 29 times.

Javonte Robinson tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Jamario Funches, and Keeslee Stewart returned a punt 70 yards for a TD to complete the scoring for Hinds AHS. Jimmy White and Kenyatta Lomax each had eight tackles and two sacks to spearhead the defense.

The win was the first comfortable victory of the season for Hinds AHS. The War Dawgs lost their opener, then sweated out a 15-13 win against Port Gibson last week.

Port Gibson 24, Jefferson County 12

Rudy Wilson ran for 84 yards and two touchdowns, and Port Gibson scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter to beat archrival Jefferson County. The win improved Port Gibson’s record to 2-1, more wins than they had the last four seasons combined.

JoDarius Grigsby and Mitchell Hopkins also ran for touchdowns for Port Gibson, and Everley Bentley returned an interception 82 yards to set up a score. Frank Harris ran for 64 yards and two TDs for Jefferson County.
