A Vicksburg man who held a gun to his head during a three-hour standoff with police last week was released from the hospital Tuesday and jailed immediately after being charged with attempted aggravated assault.
Torrance Burnett, 23, 290 Ford Road, was in the Issaquena County Jail without bond this morning pending his initial court appearance, said Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams.
Burnett was picked up by Vicksburg police at the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center at 1:18 p.m., Williams said.
On the morning of Sept. 2, Burnett had just appeared in Vicksburg Municipal Court, where he was convicted of domestic violence, when he went to a car in the parking lot, took out a gun and headed back to the department’s headquarters on Veto and Monroe streets.
A policeman tackled him, but Burnett got away, ran across Walnut Street and stood near the south wall of the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library for three hours with a Hi-Point 9 mm gun to his head. Vicksburg, Jackson and state police cordoned off a city block, keeping patrons in the library and delaying business transactions, until a negotiator talked Burnett into putting down the gun. He was taken directly to the VA.
Burnett, a veteran of two U.S. Army tours in Iraq, spoke during the standoff of horrors associated with the war. A family member who contacted the newspaper after the standoff to express appreciation to police and elected officials said Burnett had seen friends injured and killed.
Williams said the charges filed Tuesday stem from Burnett’s grabbing the gun and heading back to the police station.
On the morning of the standoff, Burnett had been sentenced to pay a fine of $606.50, which would be suspended after completion of the Victim Intervention Program, which focuses on anger management and sensitivity training.
