NATCHEZ — Warren Central knocked Natchez from the unbeaten ranks with a 26-23 win Friday night.
The Vikings overcame a late fourth quarter fumble by forcing one on a hit by defensive back Bill McRight in the final two minutes to preserve the win. Warren Central improves to 2-2 heading into next week’s bye week. Natchez slips to 3-1.
The Vikings took a 26-15 lead early in the fourth quarter after Devon Bell hit a 29-yard field goal. Natchez answered with a scoring drive and made the two-point conversion to cut the Viking lead to 26-23.
On the ensuing possession, WC tried to work the clock, but fumbled. McRight’s hit, though, swung the momentum back to the Vikings, who then ran out the clock.
Tim Jones opened the Viking scoring on a 5-yard TD run. Natchez scored and made its kick to take a 7-6 lead.
The Vikings retook the lead on Bell’s 28-yard field goal to go up 9-7. Beau Wallace then scored on a 3-yard run and Bell’s kick increased WC’s lead to 16-7 at halftime. In the second half, Jones got his second touchdown on a 1-yard run.
